The immediate ancestor of the Toy Fox Terrier is the Smooth Fox Terrier, which originated in England.
It remained for American fanciers to breed the Fox Terrier down in size to Toy dimensions while still retaining the liveliness and alertness that made the Fox Terrier a favourite.
Sometimes known as the Amertoy (short for American Toy Fox Terrier), the Toy Fox differs from its larger brother in that its ears are usually carried erect instead of folding over.
The United Kennel Club (in the U.S.) began registering the Smooth Fox in 1912 and the Toy Fox was developed between that time and the mid-1920s. However they were still registered as Smooth Fox Terriers up until 1936, when the UKC began registering them under their current name.
Toy Fox Terriers remain playful all their lives. So comical they keep their owners continuously entertained, the breed is self-possessed, spirited and determined. They are easily trained, alert, loyal, fearless and highly intelligent.
Energetic, lively and strong for their size, Toy Fox Terriers are amazingly agile as well. The breed can get most of its exercise playing and jumping into laps. |
