Manchester Terrier (Toy)Originally known as the Black and Tan Terrier, The Manchester Terrier originated in Manchester, England.

Records date back to the 1500's when a Whippet was mated with a rat-killing dog, a dark brown mutt terrier. They were used for two particular contest or sports, rat killing and rabbit coursing.

The breed became useful and they soon became popular. The name, however, was a problem because dogs of this type were not just found in Manchester but all over England.

Around the late 1800's, Manchester became a breeding center but even though the dog was being sent from Manchester all the way the the United States the name of the dog went back to Black and Tan Terrier until the 1920's.

In 1923 a new dog club, the Manchester Terrier Club of America changed the name back to Manchester Terrier and it remained the name of this breed.

With such remarkable skills and their stable temperament the Manchester became very popular as pets and watch dogs.

The Manchester is extremely intelligent, affectionate, and has an excellent disposition. They are not picky eaters and will accept most any diet. Manchester's are very clean and easily house-broken.
