English Springer SpanielThe pendulous ears, soft gentle expression, sturdy build and friendly wagging tail proclaim the Springer unmistakably as a member of the ancient family of Spaniels.

The English Springer Spaniel is the largest of the land spaniels, and was originally used to find and spring game for the nets, or falcons, carried by hunters.

Every inch a sporting dog, the Springer is a medium-size animal with a neat, compact body. His attractive liver and white or black and white coat, with or without tan markings, is moderately long and glossy with featherings on his legs, ears, chest and brisket.

A tireless worker in the field with great tenacity and endurance, the English Springer Spaniel is probably the best choice for the sportsman who wants one dog only, as an all purpose gundog

A people dog, he thrives on human companionship. Playful and patient with children, he loves nothing better than romping around taking part in their games.

The English Springer needs as much good hard exercise as he can get, and in addition to the usual running and galloping, thoroughly enjoys the chance to have a swim.

He should not just be shut out in the backyard and left to his own devices. Puppies in particular get very bored and wilful if deprived of company.

Although normally fairly quiet, the Springer nevertheless makes a good guard dog.
